
About Basin Creek Hot Springs
Mountain pools at about 7,000 feet in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, roughly 1.5 miles by trail from the trailhead off Basin Creek Road near Stanley. The main pool has a sandy gravel bottom and fits four to six people at 100-115°F. A few smaller pools nearby run at slightly different temperatures.

From Stanley, drive east on Highway 21 for 3 miles, then turn south onto Basin Creek Road (Forest Road 619). Follow it about 3 miles to the trailhead. May require high clearance. Hike 1.5 miles along the Basin Creek trail through forest and meadows with creek crossings. GPS or a Sawtooth NRA map recommended. Allow 1-1.5 hours to the springs.
Best Time to Visit
July through September for snow-free trails and warm days at this elevation. Wildflowers peak in July and early August. Earlier or later in the season you may hit snow on the trail.
Tips
- ✓Check Forest Road 619 conditions before driving; it can be impassable early in the season.
- ✓Bring warm layers; temperatures at 7,000 feet drop fast after sunset.
- ✓Pack water purification or carry enough water for the full hike.
- ✓Late afternoon arrivals catch alpenglow on the Sawtooth peaks from the pools.
- ✓Carry bear spray, especially if camping overnight in the Stanley Basin.
- ✓July and August offer the best trail conditions and wildflower displays.
- ✓Bring a waterproof bag for gear during creek crossings.
