
About Goldbug Hot Springs
Cascading terraced pools spill down a narrow canyon wall near Salmon, fed by clear thermal water that deposits travertine in orange, white, and green layers. The upper pools run around 110°F; lower ones cool to 85°F as hot water mixes with Warm Spring Creek. Pool sizes range from two-person basins to spots fitting six or eight.

From Salmon, drive south on US-93 about 23 miles. The signed trailhead is on the east side just past mile marker 282, with parking for 15-20 vehicles. Trail runs 2 miles east, gaining 1,400 feet. First mile is open sagebrush; final half-mile has creek crossings and rock scrambling. Allow 1-1.5 hours in, slightly less out.
Best Time to Visit
May through October for snow-free trail access. Winter visits are possible but the trail gets icy and significantly harder. Weekdays year-round are the quietest.
Tips
- ✓Start early to secure parking and avoid midday heat on the exposed first mile.
- ✓Bring sturdy boots with ankle support. The canyon trail is rocky with creek crossings.
- ✓No potable water at trailhead or on trail; pack enough for the full hike.
- ✓Carry a dry bag for towels and clothes during creek crossings.
- ✓Weekdays and shoulder seasons (spring/fall) are far less crowded than summer weekends.
- ✓Test water before entering; upper pools can exceed 110°F.
- ✓Pack out all trash. No facilities at the springs.
