About Hot Springs Campground

A Forest Service campground where hot springs flow right through the campsites along the South Fork of the Payette River near Lowman. You can soak in geothermal pools steps from your tent. The pools sit along the riverbank, mixing hot source water with cold river water so you can dial in your preferred temperature by moving closer to or farther from the source.

From Boise, drive north on Highway 21 through Idaho City for about 60 miles to Lowman. Continue past Lowman on Highway 21 toward Stanley. The campground is on the right (south) side, about 5 miles east of Lowman along the South Fork Payette. Watch for the campground sign. From Stanley, drive southwest on Highway 21 about 40 miles. No high-clearance needed.

Best Time to Visit

Late June through September. July-August have the best river levels for edge soaking. September brings fall color and fewer people. Campground is typically closed October through May.

Tips

  • Reserve ahead or arrive early on summer weekends. Fills fast.
  • Camping fee covers the site; soaking is free.
  • Bring water shoes for the rocky riverbank.
  • Evenings and early mornings are best for soaking with fewer people.
  • Store food in bear-resistant containers; black bears are active here.
  • River current can be strong. Use caution near the edge during spring runoff.
  • Bring firewood; gathering may be restricted in the campground.
  • Check with Lowman Ranger District for campground status and fire restrictions before your trip.
  • Dispersed camping along Highway 21 is a backup when the campground is full.
