About Russian John Hot Spring

A single small pool on BLM land about 18 miles north of Ketchum on Highway 75 toward Galena Summit. Fits two to four people. Water holds steady around 98-105F with a modest flow rate, comfortable for long soaks without needing to mix in cold water. Named after a Russian sheepherder who worked the surrounding rangeland in the late 1800s.

From Ketchum, drive north on Highway 75 toward Galena Summit about 18 miles. Just past the Sawtooth National Recreation Area boundary sign and before Galena Summit, turn right (east) onto a gravel road. The spring is visible from the road on the right side. Small pullout for parking, pool is a few steps from your car. Any standard vehicle works. Winter may require chains or snow tires on Highway 75 near Galena Summit.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round. Fall has golden aspens along Highway 75. Spring can be muddy around the pool. Low light pollution makes evening and night soaks good for stargazing.
