Six or more soaking pools along Warm Springs Creek, reached by a flat 1-mile trail through old-growth cedar and fir in the Clearwater National Forest. Upper pools run 110F+ near the source; lower pools mix with creek water and sit around 95-100F. The largest pools hold eight to ten people, with smaller ones tucked against the bank for couples or solo soakers.

From Missoula, take I-90 west to Lolo, then US-12 southwest about 90 miles along the Lochsa River. Trailhead is on the south side of Highway 12 near mile marker 152, about 1 mile east of the Warm Springs Pack Bridge. From Lewiston, take US-12 east about 100 miles. From the signed parking area, cross the footbridge over the Lochsa and follow the trail south along Warm Springs Creek about 1 mile to the first pools. Minimal elevation gain.

Best Time to Visit

June through October for the easiest trail conditions. Winter soaks in the snowy forest are worth it if you have traction gear. Weekdays year-round for fewer people.

Tips

  • Expect clothing-optional bathing, especially at the upper pools.
  • Arrive early on summer weekends. The trailhead lot fills fast.
  • Bring water shoes for creek crossings and slippery rocks around pools.
  • Walk all the pools before settling in; temps and character vary widely.
  • Pack out all trash. No services at the springs or for many miles on Highway 12.
  • Winter visits require traction devices for the icy trail and warm layers for the hike.
  • Weir Creek Hot Springs is a few miles west on Highway 12 for a two-spring day.
  • Bring drinking water and snacks; no cell service in the Lochsa corridor.
