About Kirkham Hot Springs

Hot water pours over a 15-foot travertine cliff and into rock-lined pools along the South Fork of the Payette River. The waterfall is the main draw. You can stand under it or soak in the pools below, where temperatures range from about 100°F at the river's edge to 130°F near the source. Colorful mineral deposits streak the cliff face in orange, yellow, and white.

Directions to Kirkham Hot Springs

44.072, -115.543

From Boise, drive north on Highway 21 approximately 65 miles through Idaho City to Lowman. Continue east on Highway 21 for 4 miles. The signed Kirkham Hot Springs day-use area is on the right (south) side. Forest Service day-use fee required. Short trail from parking to pools.

Best Time to Visit

September through October for smaller crowds and fall foliage in the canyon. Summer weekends are packed. Winter soaking is possible but Highway 21 access depends on snow conditions.

Tips

  • Arrive before 9 AM on weekends. The lot fills fast in peak season.
  • Bring cash for the day-use fee; card payment may not be available.
  • Avoid standing directly under the hottest part of the waterfall. Source temps exceed 130°F.
  • Wear water shoes; travertine and algae make the rocks very slippery.
  • Kirkham Campground next door is a convenient base for overnight trips.
  • Fall visits mean fewer crowds and golden canyon foliage.
  • Bring towels and drinking water; pack out all trash.
  • The cooler riverside pools are more comfortable if the upper pools run too hot.
