
About Rocky Canyon Hot Springs
Riverside pools along the South Fork of the Payette between Lowman and Garden Valley, about 7 miles east of Garden Valley off the Banks-Lowman Highway. Source water comes up at 120-130F and feeds visitor-built rock pools at the river's edge. Divert cold river water in to bring temps down to your preference.

From Boise, drive north on Highway 21 about 65 miles to Lowman. Turn west onto the Banks-Lowman Highway (Forest Road 24) and continue about 32 miles toward Garden Valley. Pullout is on the south side of the road, roughly 7 miles east of Garden Valley. Look for parked cars on the shoulder. Short, steep trail down to the river takes 5-10 minutes.
Best Time to Visit
August through October when river levels are lowest and the most pools are accessible. Winter visits are quieter but roads may be snowy. Weekdays year-round to avoid Boise weekend crowds.
Tips
- ✓Arrive early on weekends; the pullout fills fast in peak season.
- ✓Bring water shoes with good grip for the rocky riverbank and slippery pool edges.
- ✓Test pool temps before getting in. Source water exceeds 120F.
- ✓Pack a trash bag; there are no receptacles.
- ✓Late summer and early fall have the lowest river levels and most exposed pools.
- ✓Combine with Pine Flats and Kirkham for a South Fork Payette springs day.
- ✓Trail down to the pools is steep and slippery when wet or icy.
