Best Time to Visit

August through October when river levels are lowest and the most pools are accessible. Winter visits are quieter but roads may be snowy. Weekdays year-round to avoid Boise weekend crowds.

Tips

  • Arrive early on weekends; the pullout fills fast in peak season.
  • Bring water shoes with good grip for the rocky riverbank and slippery pool edges.
  • Test pool temps before getting in. Source water exceeds 120F.
  • Pack a trash bag; there are no receptacles.
  • Late summer and early fall have the lowest river levels and most exposed pools.
  • Combine with Pine Flats and Kirkham for a South Fork Payette springs day.
  • Trail down to the pools is steep and slippery when wet or icy.
